History:
The Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier originated in Ireland as an all-around farm dog, perhaps serving in this function for hundreds of years. Besides the ever-essential terrier function of extinguishing vermin, he also helped round up stock and guard the homestead.

The Wheaten wasn't recognized as a breed by the Irish Kennel Club until 1937, on St. Patrick's Day and the first Wheatens arrived in the U.S. in November of 1946. It wasn't until 1962, however, that the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America was founded in Brooklyn. Naturally, the first meeting took place on St. Patrick's Day.

Height/Weight:
The ideal height for a male Wheaten is 18.5 in (47 cm) and weight should fall in
the range of 35-45 lb (16-20.5 kg). Females will stand 17.5 in (44 cm) and register 30-35 lb (13.5-16 kg).

Color:
Pale gold to warm honey is the colour of the Wheaten. Darker shading may be found on the ears and muzzle. Pups are born dark in colour and lighten to wheaten as they mature.

Temperament:
Wheatens are  sweet, loving and loyal. They are the calmest and least 'terrier' like of all the terriers but they still have a lot of energy to burn. They love to play and they are joyous and bouncy dogs. They are highly intelligent and quick to learn but they can also be stubborn at times. They are very sensitive dogs and they do best with gentle training methods. Wheatens are extremely friendly and they love children. They will bond with the entire family. Wheatens really have wonderful temperaments! They are far less scrappy than many other terrier breeds and most Wheatens will get along well with other dogs.  Wheatens tend to be a quiet breed and are not prone to being barkers.

Coat:
Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers most commonly come in two coat types: Irish and American. True Irish Coated Wheatens are much harder to find in North America. Many 'Irish Coated' Wheatens here tend to be a mix of the Irish and American coat types. The American coat is much fluffier and fuller in appearance while the Irish coat tends to be thinner and silkier with visible waves and it lays more closely to the body. The Irish coat is the true original working coat. While it does still mat, it is much easier to maintain than the American variety. However, the Irish coat to some people looks a bit unkempt. You can spend an hour brushing an Irish coated Wheaten and in one shake the dog will look like it hasn't been brushed in a week. The American Coated Wheaten looks more luxurious and cuter to many people but it mats much more easily. Even with regular brushing most owners will choose to have their Wheaten trimmed in a short and easy to maintain cut.
There are many varieties within the Irish and American Coats. The above info is a generalization of each.
* Wheaten Terriers do not shed. They are a good choice for allergy sufferers. However, if you or a family member is allergic to dogs I recommend trying to find a Wheaten to be around prior to purchasing one. That way you can see if there is any reaction in advance.

I use the Andis SMC Excel 5 Speed Clippers and I've been quite happy with them.

Wheaten ears should be kept clean. Like any non-shedding breed their ears can be prone to getting wax build up. I am against plucking. It is not necessary and it is painful for the dog.
